Born and reared in Switzerland, Mark Baumgartner lives and works in New York City since 1988. In 1994 he opened his Studio for Architecture, Design and Fabrication.
He invents, designs and builds objects that relate to functional design. Recurring themes are the Monolith Series and the Modular Series. His main interests lay in the architectural exploration of the object that is scaled to the human body and in the aesthetics of engineering.
Over the past two decades, Baumgartner has realized a large body of objects. All of them were either realized as a site-specific piece or as a prototype. He uses aluminum as the main material and adds others to it such as industrial grade woods or plastics.
In addition to his own body of work, Baumgartner has also designed and built works of art for artists such as Dennis Adams, Alfredo Jaar, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Rodney Graham.
He has also provided services as a Consultant on Percent for Art projects for the artists Dennis Adams, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Michael Falco.
Mark Baumgartner has an MFA equivalent degree in Architecture, Interior Design and Industrial Design from the Höhere Schule für Gestaltung (HFG) in Basel, Switzerland. He studied Film and Photography at The Cooper Union in New York City as an exchange student.
